**In one line:** India's goods exports rose 23.04% to $44.40 billion in September 2026, narrowing the monthly trade deficit to $30.21 billion, even though the April to September goods deficit widened to $177.64 billion.

India's merchandise (goods) exports rose 23.04% to $44.40 billion in September 2026 from $36.08 billion a year earlier, according to Commerce Ministry data released on 15 October 2026. Merchandise imports grew more slowly, by about 8%, to $74.61 billion from $69.08 billion. As a result the goods trade deficit narrowed to $30.21 billion from $33 billion in September 2025. Electronic goods led the rise, up 70.44% to $5.31 billion, followed by petroleum products (up 31.90% to $6.22 billion), organic and inorganic chemicals (up 24.21% to $2.94 billion) and engineering goods (up 20.91% to $12.17 billion). Exports to the US rose 47.99% in the month.

The services side was flat: estimated services exports were $36.35 billion against $36.67 billion a year ago, and the September services figures are estimates because RBI data runs only up to August. Counting goods and services together, total exports were $80.75 billion (up 10.99%) and total imports $94.05 billion (up 8.19%), so the overall trade deficit was $13.30 billion against $14.17 billion. On the import side, gold imports fell 81.27% and silver imports 49.11% year on year, while imports from Oman, Russia, Korea and China grew sharply.

The half-year picture is less comfortable. In April to September 2026-27, merchandise exports rose 18.51% to $259.89 billion, but imports reached $437.53 billion, so the goods deficit widened to $177.64 billion from $156.88 billion. The services surplus of $102.71 billion offset part of it, leaving an overall deficit of $74.93 billion against $58.10 billion a year earlier. Core exports (excluding petroleum and gems and jewellery) were $203.41 billion against $175.06 billion. Exports to the US in the half-year were about $51 billion against $45.73 billion despite tariff-related disruptions, and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said talks on an India-US trade agreement were progressing.

## Mains practice question

India's goods trade deficit narrowed in September 2026, yet the deficit for April to September widened. Explain this trend and discuss the role of services exports in India's external balance. (250 words)

### Model answer

India's merchandise exports rose 23.04% to $44.40 billion in September 2026, narrowing the monthly goods deficit to $30.21 billion, but the half-year goods deficit widened to $177.64 billion.

## Why the month looked better
- Exports grew far faster (23%) than imports (about 8%).
- Electronics (+70.44%), petroleum products (+31.90%) and engineering goods (+20.91%) led.
- Gold imports fell 81.27%, cutting the import bill.

## Why the half-year worsened
- April to September imports reached $437.53 billion against exports of $259.89 billion.
- Import growth outpaced export growth over the six months, so the goods deficit rose from $156.88 billion to $177.64 billion.
- Imports from China, Russia and Oman grew sharply.

## Role of services
- Services produced a surplus of $102.71 billion in April to September, offsetting part of the goods gap.
- The overall deficit was $74.93 billion, much smaller than the goods deficit alone.
- But services exports were flat in September ($36.35 billion against $36.67 billion), a reminder that this cushion is not guaranteed.

## Way forward
- Sustain electronics and engineering momentum through production-linked incentives and trade agreements, including the India-US deal under negotiation.
- Broaden core exports, which rose to $203.41 billion in the half-year.
- Diversify services beyond IT to keep the surplus growing.

A strong month does not change the structural picture: India runs a large goods deficit that services surpluses only partly cover, so export competitiveness in goods remains the key task.

## The basics

## Why this matters
Monthly trade data is one of the most quoted numbers in the economy, and UPSC expects you to read it correctly. A country's external position depends not only on goods but also on services, and the two can move in opposite directions.

## Goods and services are two separate ledgers
**Merchandise trade** counts physical goods crossing the border. **Services trade** counts things like IT, consulting and travel. India runs a large deficit in goods and a large surplus in services. Both sit inside the current account of the Balance of payments.

## What happened in September
Goods exports grew 23.04%, much faster than imports, so the monthly gap shrank. Read more in Trade deficit.

## Why the half-year deficit still widened
A single month can mislead. Over April to September, imports grew faster than exports, so the goods deficit rose by about $21 billion. The services surplus cushioned part of it, but the overall deficit still rose from $58.10 billion to $74.93 billion.

## Reading 'core' exports
Petroleum exports swing with crude prices, and gems and jewellery with gold prices. Analysts therefore watch exports excluding both, explained in Core exports: excluding petroleum and gems. These rose to $203.41 billion in the half-year from $175.06 billion, a sign of broad-based growth.
