**In one line:** On 22 October 2026 Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Donald Tusk agreed to double India-Poland trade by 2030 and to start a Defence Industry Dialogue, with Poland backing India's UN Security Council ambitions.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made an official visit to India from 21 to 23 October 2026 with about 100 business leaders, the first visit by a Polish Prime Minister since 2010. After talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on 22 October, the two sides issued a joint statement setting the goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030. Modi said the countries would achieve this shared goal and invited Polish companies to co-develop and co-produce in defence, space and nuclear energy. Tusk said the two countries had 'no conflicts of interest'. Poland is India's largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe.

Trade stood at $6.36 billion in 2025 (Indian exports $4.83 billion, imports $1.53 billion), according to Polish data cited by India's Ministry of External Affairs, up from about $1.96 billion in 2013. The joint statement proposes a Defence Industry Dialogue for co-development and co-production, expects an agreement on protecting classified information to be signed soon, and sets up a counter-terrorism dialogue. Both condemned the Pahalgam attack of 22 April 2025 and called for early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. Poland backed India's membership of a reformed and expanded UN Security Council and its candidacy for a non-permanent seat for 2028-29. Poland will join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and India invited it to the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

The visit builds on the Strategic Partnership agreed during Modi's August 2024 trip to Warsaw, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 45 years, and its Action Plan for 2024-2028. The leaders welcomed the conclusion of the EU-India free trade agreement and called for its early signing and ratification, on which the trade target depends. Other outcomes include work on AI, semiconductors and quantum technologies, an MoU on geology, mining and critical minerals under negotiation, cooperation on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, and an ICCR Chair of Indian Studies at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. On Ukraine, the statement expressed deep concern and called for a just and lasting peace consistent with international law and territorial integrity.

## Challenges
- Trade target depends on signing the India-EU FTA.
- Different views of Russia; the statement balanced this with a call for a just peace in Ukraine.

Poland gives India a foothold in Europe's fastest-rising region and a partner for its defence and technology goals.

## The basics

## Why this matters

Poland is India's largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe and now a trillion-dollar economy. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's visit to New Delhi from 21 to 23 October 2026, the first by a Polish Prime Minister since 2010, turned the 2024 India-Poland Strategic Partnership into concrete plans on trade, defence and technology. It also shows how India is building ties with Europe's eastern flank while the India-EU Free Trade Agreement moves towards signing.

## From goodwill to strategy

The story of the Good Maharaja and Polish refugee children is the emotional anchor of the relationship and is still honoured in Poland, with eight Polish schools named after the Jam Saheb.

## Trade: small base, steady growth

Trade has more than tripled since 2013 and the balance favours India. Indian investment in Poland is estimated at over $3 billion, and Polish investment in India at $685 million.

## What the 2026 joint statement adds

The UN support matters because a seat is won by votes in the General Assembly (UN Security Council non-permanent seats).
