Electoral Registration Officer

In one line: The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) is the officer responsible for preparing and revising the electoral roll of an Assembly constituency.

Role

The ERO is an officer of the government or of a local authority whom the Election Commission designates in consultation with the State government. Assistant EROs help with the work. The ERO receives claims (Form 6), objections (Form 7) and correction requests (Form 8), issues notices, hears the persons concerned and passes orders. The ERO also acts on his own motion under Section 22 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

Why it is in the news

In Karnataka, EROs and AEROs were listed as the objectors on 61,059 Form 7s generated by software. Because the same office then decides on those objections, critics see a conflict that removes the independent check an outside objector provides.
