H-1B visa
In one line: The H-1B is a temporary US work visa that lets American employers hire foreign professionals in specialised occupations.
How it works
An employer sponsors the worker and files the petition. The worker's lawful stay depends on that employment, so losing the job can mean having to leave the United States. Vance described the visa as the worker's "only lifeline" to the US, and argued that this gives employers too much power.
Costs and recent changes
In September 2025 the US imposed a one-time fee of $100,000 on new H-1B petitions; federal courts have since struck it down. The administration has proposed a fee of $103,265, which is not yet final.
Why it is in the news
On 8 October 2026 Vance called some H-1B workers "indentured servants" and claimed they earn about $20,000 less than comparable Americans. On 18 October he said his rhetoric had been imperfect.
